Island Yoga is waiting for you to say yes!

Island Yoga SUP Yoga Teacher Training

OCTOBER 4 – 8, 2017

4 Nights / 4 Days  Immersion

Rachel Brathen, Yoga Girl™, pioneered the practice of yoga on a Stand-up Paddle Board after watching her husband and dog riding together on a surfboard. If they can balance together on a surfboard, it is possible to practice yoga on the water, too! Soon after, Rachel created SUP Yoga on the Caribbean island of Aruba. In collaboration with dear friends and impassioned experts in the subject – Jessica Taylor, yoga teacher and WPA teacher, and Ryan Taylor, WPA teacher, PaddleFit Teacher, and ACA Coastal Kayak teacher. With this team, Island Yoga Aruba became the training center for SUP Yoga.

Now, Jessica and Ryan hold SUP Teacher Trainings at Island Yoga annually. This immersion is offered for those who want to deepen their personal practice and safely lead classes on the water. It includes a comprehensive understanding of how to teach SUP and manage clients on the water with knowledgeable authority. Drawn from several years of experience in on-water practice and training, your guides will teach the importance of location, anchoring boards, safety and preparation. You will receive guidance on the business of SUP Yoga and how to use social media to reach a larger market, and you will have opportunities to teach-back in small groups and receive one-on-one meetings to discuss your goals. You will complete the training prepared to effectively teach a beginner and a dynamic flow yoga class, specific to SUP Yoga, with modifications for all levels.

This program offers above and beyond content. Not only will you receive in-depth learning of SUP safety and unique yoga sequencing, but you may also become certified with WPA, World Paddle Association.

Upon completion of this training and passing of all examinations, you will receive 30 Continuing Education credits with globally recognized Yoga Alliance.

FAQ

What do the different room options mean?

The Shared Room is for anyone who is open to sharing a bedroom and bathroom with one other person. You each have your own bed. If you are traveling solo, you are welcome to book this option; many other solo travelers book this option, too. You are not responsible for securing the bookings for the other 3 spots in the unit. If you are traveling with people and you all want to book this option, please let us know so we can assure you’re all placed in the same unit. This option is $6,865 USD per person.

The Private Room is for two people who are traveling together and want a private space. You are not paired with someone you don’t know if you book this spot. If you want a private room but are traveling solo, you would select the Single Room option. This option is $7,065 USD per person.

The Single Room is for ONE person only. If you want to share the room with a family member or friend, you would select the Private Room option.

Ambre Van de Berg will be assisting every portion of this training. She is a graduate of the very first SUP YTT held by Rachel, Jessica and Ryan, and she was a resident teacher at Island Yoga for nearly one year. After completing the SUP YTT in 2015, Ambre brought SUP Yoga to her home of the Netherlands for the first time. You can read more about Ambre on our team page.

What if I have special circumstances?

If you have a special circumstance, please describe in an email to experience@islandyoga.com.

Should I fly in the day before the program begins and depart the day after the program ends? When exactly does the training start and end?

The program will begin the evening of October 4, and it will end after dinner on October 8. If you can arrange your flights to be able to present for the first and final evenings – wonderful. The most ideal option would be to arrive 1 day early (October 3) and leave 1 day later (October 9) so that you have time to slowly ground. If you would like to extend your stay for any reason, including just October 3 and/or October 9, we ask that you contact the hotel directly to book your additional nights.

Please note that if you are flying from Aruba back to the US, you will go through customs in Aruba before departure instead of upon landing Stateside. It is recommended to allot 2.5-3 hours for full check-in and customs before your departure time.

Is this a Yoga Alliance certified program?

Yes, this program grants you continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance. Upon completion and passing of all exams, you will be eligible to list these credits on your Yoga Alliance profile. Instructions for how to do so will be given at the end of the training.

How many people will be in accepted into this training?

We wish we could hold space for each one of you at once! Since our set of SUP Yoga boards can only fit so many people in a class, we will accept 14 people per training.

Is there a different price for international exchange rates?

We are not able to alter our set prices to accommodate all of the exchange rates that exist. All prices that you see are in USD and include all Aruban taxes.

Will I have time to relax and explore the island during the training?

As this is an intensive-structured training, we have a lot to fit into just a few days. You can expect to spend most of your time learning and practicing, or resting. If you would like to extend your stay in order to explore the island further, we welcome you to arrange an extended stay.

Do I need to rent a car?

We will provide shuttle service to and from the airport, as well as between Island Yoga and the beach for on-water training time. If you choose to extend your stay, then you may want to consider renting a car. Please note that we will only be able to offer airport shuttles on our set start and end dates – September 28 and the morning of October 3 – or 1 day before, September 27.

What kind of food is served? What if I have specific dietary needs?

Our onsite Nourish Café will be serving fresh, vegetarian breakfasts and lunches each day. The kitchen houses gluten, nut, and soy products. If there are specific foods that you must avoid, the cafe will do their absolute best to keep your foods separate from the foods of concern and supplement however else possible. Our application form includes a section for you to describe your dietary needs.

If you have any severe allergies, it is highly recommended to travel with an EpiPen and to inform our team.

What if I'm not an advanced practitioner? Can I still apply?

You must be certified at the 200-RYT level. It is highly recommended that you have been teaching yoga for at least one year and have some experience on a SUP board.

All applicants must be proficient swimmers and comfortable at water sports.

Do I need to have completed any training or teaching experience to be eligible?

Yes, you need to have completed a 200-hr level Yoga Teacher Training from a recognized school.

Are there payment plans or scholarships available?

You will need to pay $545 in order to submit your application. Once your acceptance has been confirmed, you will have until 45 days before the training begins to submit the remaining amount. The payment plan does not extend past this 45-day benchmark, which is August 14.

If you are not accepted this time, $500 of your initial deposit will be refunded to you. The $45 processing fee remains non-refundable.

We would love to be able to offer scholarships in the future! We are not yet able to do so, but we encourage you to explore fundraising or getting creative to pull the funds together. The internet is a great source to look into for this; one example is gofundme.com. Where there is a will, there is always a way!

Will I need to bring my own yoga mat and props?

Each participant is required to have a mat for the studio practices. If you prefer to use your own props, such as a block and a strap, it is recommended to bring those, as well. If you do not bring your own, we will have props available in the boutique for you to rent or buy. Please refer to “What do I need to bring” above for a complete list.

I want to room with a friend. Is this possible?

Yes! Our application form will ask for the name of your friend, and we will do our absolute best to accommodate.

Will I need a Visa to stay in Aruba for the length of this training?

Most tourists can travel to Aruba for up to 30 days without any special permissions or Visas. However, we ask you to please consult this link to see if your country of residence is one that does require special documents.

Will drinking or smoking be permissible during this program?

Smoking is prohibited on the Island Yoga premises. We encourage you to cleanse your body so that it can absorb the knowledge – both mentally and physically – most optimally throughout this training program.

What if my menstrual cycle falls within these training dates?

It will be up to you to decide how much you will practice and how much you will rest. From the medical side, there is no need to stop what you are doing during your cycle. From the Ayurvedic side, which is the sister science to yoga, it is recommended to slow down and avoid inversions and certain foods, while boosting other yoga poses and foods. You could join the group to take notes but not practice, but we do suggest that you bring whatever supplements or supplies you use at home for your cycle so that you are prepared to tend to your body well, enabling you to be present during all lessons.

Do I need to worry about Zika?

Zika cases have been recorded in Aruba, like so many islands and tropical regions, since 2015. However, the amount of confirmed cases are relatively insignificant in number. There are zero recorded cases of pregnant women contracting Zika in Aruba. As long as you wear bug repellant in the evenings and are not pregnant or trying to become pregnant, you will not need to worry. Island Yoga maintains mosquito-free temperatures at all times indoors, and we utilize citronella coils in the outdoor bar area in the evenings. It’s best to pack your own bug repellant and keep it with you for evenings, just in case.
