In our daily lives, we often find ourselves surrounded by experiences, sounds, and people asking a lot of our energy and attention. Yin yoga is the opposite of this. It is the perfect pause in our dynamic lives as yin offers calm, stillness and peace. Yin Yoga focuses on the bones and joints, especially the areas of the hips, pelvis and lower spine, targeting the deeper connective tissues in the body. These connective tissues are best reached when the postures are held between at least 2-5 minutes.
Honoring basic anatomical differences and using props, you will be stimulated to find your own places of resistance and linger there as you breathe smoothly. This practice allows your energy to flow more freely, improves flexibility and stimulates the organs. Yin yoga is an excellent practice to complement high-intensity sports and more dynamic styles of yoga where the focus lies more on stretching and strengthening the muscle groups. We meet on the beach for an introduction to our floating yoga studio, and together walk out to our SUP boards that are anchored down to stay stable in the wind and waves. Your SUP Yoga teacher will guide you through a practice that starts slowly, letting you get used to the unstable surface, and then moving into a more dynamic flow before slowing down to cool off with restorative postures – and the greatest Savasana you’ve ever experienced (truly!). This practice is half Yin Yoga, half Vinyasa Flow, and will both challenge and soothe you. Yin Yoga is a soft complimentary practice to the more dynamic side of Yang Yoga. During class you will wake up, lengthen and strengthen your muscles, body, and mind with a Vinyasa practice and then smoothly transition to a series of floor postures held for several minutes in order to access the deep layers of connective tissue in the body while creating space to rest.
